Privacy policy

Only the German version of this privacy policy is legally binding.

This policy applies to this website and to the Equilo app for iOS, iPadOS and watchOS.

The most important point first: Your diary data is stored on your device and, if you want, in your private iCloud. There is no user account and no server of our own that stores your health data. Equilo contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking tool. We, as the provider, cannot see your entries.

2. This website

Hosting and server log files

The website runs on a server in Germany (Hetzner Online GmbH, operated via a self-hosted Coolify instance). When you visit, the server processes technically necessary access data in log files: IP address, date and time, the address requested, the amount of data transferred and the requesting browser. This serves to deliver the website and keep it secure, and is based on our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The logs are kept only briefly and are not combined with other data.

No cookies, no tracking, no external services

This website sets no cookies, uses no analytics or tracking tools and loads no content from third-party servers. Fonts and images are stored on our own server.

Contact by email

If you write to us, for example at equilo@tillheidrich.de, we process your details only to answer your enquiry (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR) and delete them as soon as they are no longer needed.

3. The Equilo app

What you enter and where it is stored

You enter your data yourself: vertigo attacks with type, intensity, duration, symptoms, warning signs and suspected triggers, daily entries (for example balance, mood, strain, sleep, tinnitus), early signs, medication and doses taken, treatment events, hearing tests, questions for your doctor's appointment, notes and optional attachments such as photos of medical findings or eye videos. Equilo stores this data locally on your device.

iCloud (optional)

If you leave it switched on, Equilo syncs your data between your own devices via Apple's iCloud (CloudKit, private database). The data is then stored in your personal iCloud, which only you can access. The provider is Apple, and Apple's privacy policy applies. We have no access. You can switch syncing off in the settings at any time.

The Health app (optional)

Only with your explicit permission does Equilo read values from the Health app: sleep, heart rate variability, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, state of mind, time in daylight, headphone audio levels and hearing tests (for example the AirPods hearing test). The app evaluates vital signs only on your device, for example for the pattern analysis, and does not store them in its database. Equilo shows hearing tests from the Health app directly on your device by reading them from the Health app when needed. They are not stored in your diary and are not synced via your iCloud. Only hearing tests that you enter yourself from a clinic audiogram are part of your diary.

Only if you switch it on in the settings does Equilo record completed attacks in the Health app as the symptom “Dizziness” (with intensity) and, where applicable, nausea and vomiting. You can revoke these permissions at any time in the iOS settings under Health.

Equilo never uses data from the Health app for advertising, marketing or profiling and does not pass it on to third parties. It only ends up outside the Health app if you yourself create and share a report, an image or a backup.

Weather and location

If you use the weather feature, the app retrieves air pressure and weather data via Apple's weather service (Apple Weather, technically WeatherKit). For this, the coordinates of the place you entered are transmitted to Apple, without an account, without your name and without any link to your Apple ID. To convert the place name you entered into coordinates, the app also uses an Apple service, which receives only the place name for this purpose. For technical reasons, Apple sees your device's IP address with every request; Apple does not receive health data or any other details in the process. Apple's privacy policy applies. The feature is optional.

Equilo only requests your precise location when you tap “Send message with location” in Acute mode. It is then inserted as a map link into a message that you yourself send to your trusted person, via SMS/iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram or another app of your choice. The privacy terms of the respective service apply to sending it. Equilo does not store the location and does not transmit it to us.

Camera, microphone, photos and contacts

Equilo only uses the camera and microphone when you record an eye video. If you choose a video or photo from your library, Equilo receives only that exact file through the iOS picker, with no access to the rest of your library. The video is stored in your diary and is not analysed by the app. For your trusted person, you can choose a contact through the iOS contact picker; Equilo then receives only the name and phone number of that one contact and has no access to your address book.

Apple Intelligence

On devices with Apple Intelligence, Equilo can suggest an entry from your description or phrase questions for your doctor's appointment. This happens with Apple's language model directly on your device. No data is sent to us or to any server for this. Every suggestion is a draft that you check.

“How I'm doing” and exports

Equilo creates images for family and partners, PDF reports, CSV files and backups on your device. They only leave the device if you share them yourself. You can protect a backup with a password that only you know. Temporary export files are deleted after sharing.

In-app purchases (Equilo Plus)

You can optionally buy Plus as a subscription or a one-time purchase. The purchase is handled entirely through Apple's App Store; we do not receive any payment data. The app checks the purchase status via Apple's StoreKit on your device. You manage and cancel subscriptions in the settings of your Apple Account. Offer codes are also redeemed through Apple; we do not learn who redeemed a code.

App Store

Equilo is distributed through Apple's App Store. Apple's privacy policy applies to downloads and updates. Apple provides us only with aggregated statistics, such as download numbers, and crash data only if you have agreed in iOS to share it with developers. We cannot identify any individual person from this.

Error log and crash reports

Equilo keeps a technical error log only on your device. This includes diagnostic data on crashes provided by iOS (MetricKit), without health data. The log only leaves the device if you export it yourself or send it to us.

Notifications

Equilo schedules reminders locally on your device. There is no push server.

Legal basis for health data

Health data belongs to the special categories of personal data (Art. 9 GDPR). You enter it yourself, voluntarily; processing on your device is based on your consent (Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR) and serves exclusively your own purpose of documentation.

4. Your rights

You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, as well as the right to withdraw consent at any time.

Because your app data is stored on your device and in your private iCloud, it's in your own hands: you can delete individual entries or everything directly in the app (Settings › Delete All Data), export a backup and remove the app at any time. For questions about the website, please contact the address given above.

5. Right to lodge a complaint

You can lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. The competent authority is the State Commissioner for Data Protection of Lower Saxony (Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz Niedersachsen).

6. Changes

We update this policy when the app or the legal situation changes. The version published here applies.
